I was no stranger to one-room schoolhouses. This is the entire student body of Lovelady, Oklahoma, District 127

Eileen Hatcher played a bigger part in Lille Skole than most people knew. She brought a complete set of encyclopedias before students came. I think she might have been responsible for all those Dr. Seuss books that kept showing up, too. Eileen was as beautiful as she was mysterious. She appeared from time to time, just to look around and see what we might need. Oddly, I don't think she ever dealt directly with the children. As much as I admired her, I never really got to know her. In 1971, she and her partner, Jimmy Ohmart, had a lot to do with getting Daeflower, the "free high school" started.

 

 

Willy Acey was helpful as a volunteer and, later, as a part-time employee. He'd have helped out either way.

 

Evan Cohen wasn't actually part of the school, but the old Ford Falcon pickup truck was. When Evan finished medical school, he took the old truck with him to Birmingham
